SPANGLISH POETRY

This week our Comenius assistant, Ida, talked about code switching to our Batxillerat students. It was a very interesting lesson in which they could learn a bit about this phenomenon and they were also taught about Spanglish. After listening to some songs and an American poet called Emanuel Xavier, who uses this technique, our students tried to create their own poems in Spanglish. Here we have some examples:

LOVE

One year ago tú gave me candies,

but now… I only eat cuando son gratis.

Before, you were entre the all el mejor,

ahora, I want that te pierdas by the world.

We walked of the hands por el garden,

now las manos and memories me arden.

Antes, we watched juntos the moon,

today, we don’t have nothing en común.

For this reason I think that the love

it’s interesting sentimiento,

si te cansas turn off

y good bye aburrimiento.

EL HAMBRE

El hambre is at the tercer mundo,

that phenomenon happens si no tienes suerte

and the fortunates don’t think ni un segundo

that this ocasiona la muerte.

If some day we acercamos to ayudar

they will come true dreams hechos realidades

and we would have done un bien para curar

a lot of las enfermedades.

Así all us in the world estaremos contentos

and together habremos vivido wonderful momentos.

CODE SWITCHING

Do you know what code switching is?
Code switching is a linguistics term denoting the concurrent use of more than one language, or language variety, in conversation. People who speak more than one language, sometimes use elements of multiple languages in conversing with each other.

In popular usage outside the field of linguistics the term code-switching is sometimes used to refer to relatively stable informal mixtures of two languages, such as Spanglish.

Examples of Spanglish with code switching:
Anita: «Hola, good morning, cómo estás?»
Mark: «Fine, y tú?»
Anita: «Todo bien. Pero tuve problemas parqueando my car this morning.»
Mark: «Sí, I know. Siempre hay problemas parqueando in el área at this time».
